Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive treatment for depression that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. TMS therapy involves placing a coil over the scalp, which generates a magnetic field that stimulates the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for mood regulation. TMS therapy is typically administered over several sessions, and each session lasts around 20-30 minutes. The frequency and number of sessions depend on the severity of the depression and the patient’s response to the treatment.
TMS therapy has shown promising results in treating depression, particularly for patients who have not responded well to traditional treatments such as antidepressants or psychotherapy. Studies have shown that TMS therapy can significantly improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression in as little as four weeks.
TMS therapy is safe and does not produce many of the side effects associated with antidepressant medication, such as weight gain or sexual dysfunction.
