TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a noninvasive treatment for depression that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. When other depression treatments have failed, TMS is commonly used.

Repetitive TMS, or rTMS, is a treatment for depression that involves the delivery of repetitive magnetic pulses.

How does it work?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) (rTMS)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) (rTMS)

An electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp near your forehead during a rTMS session. The electromagnet produces a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the part of your brain that controls mood and depression. It is thought to stimulate brain regions that are less active in depression.

Though the biology of why rTMS works isn't fully understood, the stimulation appears to change the way the brain works, which appears to alleviate depression symptoms and improve mood.

The procedure can be done in a variety of ways, and techniques may evolve as experts learn more about the most effective treatments.
